He Hasn't Chosen You: How to Stop Waiting for a Man to Decide

· 8 min read · by Dr. Eva Assogba

If you are still hoping he will wake up and pick you, this is the gentle, honest truth your heart has been avoiding. And what to do once you can finally see it.

You already know.

Somewhere underneath the explanations and the timelines and the hope, you already know.

He has not chosen you.

Not the way you want to be chosen.

Not the way you would choose him.

And still, you wait.

You read the messages again.

You replay the last good conversation.

You build a case for why this season is just hard, why he is healing, why the timing is off.

You tell yourself if you could just be a little softer, a little more patient, a little less much, he would finally see you.

I want to say this to you carefully, the way I would say it to a sister I love.

The waiting is not what is going to bring him toward you.

The waiting is what is taking you away from yourself.

What "choosing" actually looks like A man who has chosen you is not confused about you.

He is not unsure.

He is not keeping you in a category that has no name.

He moves toward you.

He plans with you.

He introduces you.

He stops looking.

He protects what he has with you because he knows what it costs to lose it.

Choosing is not a feeling he sometimes has when the room is quiet and he misses you.

Choosing is a posture.

It is consistent.

It is visible to other people.

It does not require you to translate it for your friends.

If you have to keep convincing yourself that he loves you, what you are in is not love.

It is a story you are telling yourself so it hurts less.

Why you keep waiting anyway Waiting feels like loyalty.

It feels like faith.

It feels like the opposite of giving up.

And in a culture that praises women who endure, it can even feel virtuous.

But there is something else underneath the waiting that we do not talk about often enough.

Waiting protects you from the grief.

As long as you are still hoping, you do not have to mourn.

As long as the door is cracked open, you do not have to walk through the harder one, the one marked acceptance.

The truth is, your nervous system has bonded to the cycle.

The hot and cold.

The pull and the silence.

The crumb of attention after weeks of nothing.

Your body has learned to call that intensity love, when it is actually a kind of pain you have grown used to.

The lie that keeps you stuck The lie sounds like this.

If I leave now, I waste everything I have invested.

If I stop hoping, I am the one who gave up.

If I let go, I prove I did not love him enough.

Hear me.

You did not love him too little.

You loved him into spaces he never asked to fill.

You poured into a cup he was not holding out.

The cup was never the problem.

The hand was.

Letting go is not a failure of love.

It is the moment your love stops being a punishment you keep handing to yourself.

What choosing yourself looks like Choosing yourself is not a dramatic announcement.

It is a quiet shift in posture.

It is the moment you stop arranging your life around the hope of him and start arranging it around the truth of you.

You stop checking his profile.

You stop refreshing the thread.

You stop interpreting his silence.

Silence is the answer.

You stop rehearsing what you would say if he came back.

You start asking what you actually want, before you ask whether he can give it.

You begin to notice you, the woman underneath the waiting.

Wait on the Lord.

Be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart.

There is a kind of waiting that grows you.

It is the waiting that trusts God more than it trusts the man.

It is the waiting that puts your hope where it belongs, not in someone who keeps proving he is not the answer.

You are allowed to stop You are allowed to stop today.

Not next month.

Not after one more conversation.

Not after he sees the version of you he has not earned.

Today.

You are allowed to be the woman who decided she was tired of being almost loved.

You are allowed to walk away with grief in one hand and clarity in the other.

You are allowed to choose the life that is waiting on the other side of this.

He has not chosen you.

That is the truth.

The good news is, you can.

And the moment you do, everything starts to change.
